New family members...

SO....my name wouldn't be Amy if I didn't occasionally have some huge declaration that makes Brian quiver in his boots. Or run for the hills. Or shake his head, roll his eyes, and wonder if I'm really serious all along knowing I am. Well, back in April I "declared"(really, I asked) that we would soon be raising chickens. Mmmm hmmm. Yes, I did. I asked Brian if he wouldn't mind just building me a little tiny chicken coop. Just a little one. I picked out just the place for it behind our little garage. I printed off chicken coop plans and batted my eyes sweetly. The coop has still not been built but guess what arrived today? Our sweet baby chicks!!! I got a phone call from the post office and they informed me they had a "peeping package" waiting for me there. When I walked in with the kids we could hear them in the back! We were so excited and couldn't wait to take the lid off and see them. But we held out until we got home. Thank the Lord they all "survived" the trip, if you know what I mean! Could you imagine the look on my kids faces if one of them hadn't made it. Ew. They have to live in an incubator type of box for about 4-5 weeks so Brian still has some time. But here are pictures of the babies!! We got 2 Buff Orpingtons and 2 Rhode Island Reds. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. I can't wait for our FRESH ORGANIC eggs when they start laying. Its going to be a great summer project for me and the kids. And when you all stop laughing you can take a look at the little ladies.

What they arrived in!

Here they are. From left to right: Reba, Big Mama(yellow one), "unknown"(they can't decide yet), and Sunday Lunch (Sunday for short. I know its rude) *Update: "unknown" has now been named Lucy. As in I Love Lucy. Get it? Lucille Ball. Red hair. Rhode Island Red. Nevermind...

Mommy Holly...Jo-Jo's mom... would be so happy for you! They always raised the plain Jane laying chickens along with roosters.

LOL...who came up with the names?

OK, how in the world did you find out about such a thing? Is this acceptable in your neighborhood??? JK!!! I want some!!! Can you provide a web link? My kids are eating enough organic eggs these days to make it worth my time I think. We have a local source but I never think to work it into the schedule to pick them up BEFORE we need them.

What is next? A dairy cow??? I know a dairy farmer up in PA (The Prez's uncle). He might cut you a deal! Sorry, but I had to say it. The Prez's uncle really does raise holsteins for a living. And their milk is really good and safe!

You will love it!!! My Mum has chickens and we love to visit her and have the children gather the eggs.... so much fun! And the eggs.... well what can I say... there is nothing like them.... we love to have chuckie eggs and soldiers, (typically British) and I tell you, the taste of those eggs will make up for all the hard work they make!!! Watch out for the rats.... and the foxes... but get ready for an amazing experience!!!

Aunt Dianne- we all did, sort of. I came up with Sunday Lunch, unfortunately!

Wife of Pres- we don't live in a neighborhood!! So it worked out nice!! We ordered them from My Pet Chicken because it was the only place I could find where I didn't have to order 10 or more. We only wanted 4. But it would be worth seeing if there is a place locally that you could buy chicks from. I couldn't find any here so I went to the internet. A dairy cow, you say? Hmmmm. My husband would KILL me!! I am trying to do organic with milk, eggs, cheeses, etc., and meats. Trying!!

Naomi- I actually had to google Chuckie eggs and soldiers. Found them!! I want to know how to make them. Are they just hard boiled? We have coyotes and raccoons around here so my husband is having to keep that in mind as he plans my coop.

Emily- Excuuuuuuuse me! I haven't known them that long and they all look the same to me!!

Cool ... Mom used to have some of the Rhode Island Reds - she had lots of "strange" ones too - she loved chickens! I'm sure this will be an experience for both you and your children that will be long remembered. Have fun!!!!

Just so you know, I'm not laughing one bit and I'm actually a bit jealous as I'd love a source of organic eggs that I don't have to refinance the house to afford...

Oh, and we've got two visits left in our home study but are paying for expedited services to have it written. Hopefully we'll have that wrapped up next week!
